In part I and part II of my review of the Wavestorm, I shared some of my own experiences with riding this board. I surfed with this board at Southern California surf spots: San Onofre, Santa Monica Bay St, and El Porto.  I jokingly claim to the be the unofficial spokesperson for the Costco Wavestorm.

The Good: This board is great for a beginner because it’s buoyant, it doesn’t hurt if you get smacked in the head, and once you get the feel for how to catch a wave it actually provides a pretty fun ride. Because it’s so buoyant maintaining your balance on a wave is really easy, and it’s probably a perfect board to learn how to balance when you are on a wave.

The Bad: The reality is this board was not designed to ride waves. It was really designed to teach people how to stand up on a board and actually catch a wave. Since it’s so fat, turning, flexibility, response and control are almost non-existent  on this board.

Conclusion: If you want to learn to surf, and don’t want to invest a ton of money upfront, this is a great deal. 99 bucks for a board is about as cheap as it gets.  Sure it’s not a perfect board, but if you are buying this board you are not Kelly Slater, so you won’t be able to tell the difference until you’ve built up some skill.

    Heh… I like your review.

Went in at OB first time since 27 July. I have pics, will post. Took the 8/4 Taylor pintail out. Ok it’s a gun really. Kinda shaped like a pencil. Caught a few on the inside. Details coming.
